As the JCFL by King David Nursing and Rehab stormed into Week 5, the league delivered another Sunday morning filled with highlight-reel plays and last-second heroics.
With only two regular-season games remaining, the TYH Roofing Postseason picture is beginning to take shape — but with multiple teams still clawing for a spot, every snap now matters. Three of the four matchups this week were decided on the final drive, proving once again that in the JCFL, no lead is safe.
Yaakov Schmell – Allstate Insurance 31, Doctor Auto 20
This matchup had everything: lead changes, defensive gems, and even a redemption arc for Avner Shotz, who was recently voted “softest player on the team” — and apparently took it personally.
The game opened as a defensive battle, with Schmell-Allstate clinging to a 7–6 halftime lead thanks to a nifty catch-and-run touchdown by Zack Lerner. Doctor Auto struck back early in the second half, but Schmell-Allstate QB Avi Yudkowsky answered immediately, finding Chaim Goldman in the end zone — aided by a thunderous pancake block from the newly toughened Shotz.
Doctor Auto’s Mordechai Schiermeyer briefly gave his team the lead with a dazzling run, but Schmell-Allstate’s sideline pep talk from “Papa Hoffman” (“Get my son the ball!”) seemed to do the trick. Yudkowsky hit Aaron Hoffman on a clutch sideline route to retake the lead. Moments later, Lerner sealed the deal with a game-clinching pick-six, sending Allstate to a thrilling 31–20 victory and leaving Doctor Auto wondering if Allstate also sells “turnover insurance.”
Y&L Landscaping 16, Trippin’ Kosher 13
On National Tight End Day, Y&L Landscaping dug deep — pun intended — to keep their playoff hopes alive, edging Trippin’ Kosher 16–13 in a defensive slugfest that left both teams with grass stains and pride intact.
Y&L QB Dan Gutman led an impressive opening drive capped by a slant touchdown to Eitan Rock, followed by a two-point conversion to WR Mordy Reches. From there, Y&L’s defense took over. Gedalia Gelb wreaked havoc in the backfield, forcing a bad throw that was picked off by Aron “Lefky” Lefkowitz. Gutman wasted no time capitalizing, finding Reches again for a pump-and-go touchdown and a 14–0 lead.
Before halftime, Avromi Freund crashed through the line for a safety, extending the lead to 16–0. Trippin’ Kosher rallied with a wild Hail Mary touchdown before the half, but Y&L’s defense, anchored by captain Avromi Gartenhaus, held strong. Despite a late Trippin’ score, the landscapers held their ground — proving that when Y&L’s defense digs in, good luck moving them.
Tidy Up 34, ActualEyes 31
If JCFL fans ever doubted whether flag football could be dramatic, Tidy Up and Actual Eyes erased those doubts in a 34–31 thriller.
ActualEyes jumped out to a quick 13–0 lead behind the athleticism of QB Yaakov Rosenblum, whose 80-yard scramble touchdown had fans questioning whether he’d secretly been moonlighting as Lamar Jackson. But veteran QB Ari Hettleman and his Tidy Up squad weren’t fazed. A long strike to Mitch Gross jumpstarted the offense, and Hettleman’s precision passing tied the game before halftime.
The second half was a chess match, with both teams trading scores and momentum. Down by three with under two minutes remaining, Hettleman coolly marched Tidy Up down the field, converting a do-or-die fourth down with a perfect end-zone strike to Aharon Schnur for the win.
Hettleman finished the day with five touchdown passes for the second straight week — spreading the ball like a well-trained cholent spoon. As the playoffs near, Tidy Up’s offense looks electric, but their defense? Let’s just say it could use a little… tidying up.
Evergreen Benefits Group 34, Tiger Heating & Air 20
Evergreen’s season continues to bloom, as they dominated Tiger Heating & Air 34–20 to stay atop the league standings. After conceding an early touchdown, Evergreen responded with 34 straight points — a run so decisive it might have triggered a mercy rule in any other league.
QB/Coach Chaim Finkelstein threw darts all morning, connecting with Akiva Stutman for a gorgeous 40-yard touchdown to open the scoring. From there, the Finkelstein family show continued, with Yoni Finkelstein adding his league-leading seventh two-point conversion.
Evergreen’s defense was equally ferocious — highlighted by a Chaim Fink pick-six, a Stutman interception, and a dominant showing from linemen Moshe Segelman, Dani Saks, Menachem Rubenstein, and Chaim Herbstman. By halftime, Evergreen led 28–6, and the game was essentially over — though that didn’t stop Yoni from adding another highlight-reel touchdown, Mossing a defender so badly that the poor guy may still be checking the sky for the ball.
Stutman sealed the win with his second interception of the day, as Evergreen cruised to a 4–1 record. With two games remaining, they look every bit like the team to beat.
