Last week, Rabbi Nesanel Kostelitz, shlita, the Rav of Machzikei Torah and Eish Kodesh, as well as the Rosh Kollel of the Community Kollel, was invited to Mesivta Shaarei Chaim of Baltimore to deliver a hesped for Rav Matisyahu Solomon, זצ”ל. During his speech, Rav Kostelitz reflected on how Rav Matisyahu could have become one of the leading Roshei Yeshivos in the world, yet he chose to dedicate his life to helping others grow into Roshei Yeshiva and assisting all bnei Torah, and indeed all of Klal Yisroel.
One unique aspect of Rav Matisyahu’s life was his exceptional excellence in all three pillars of Yiddishkeit: Torah, Avodah, and Gmilus chassidim. He rightfully earned the title of a gadol in each of these areas. Additionally, he played a crucial role in leading the campaign for the protection of Jewish neshamos during the era of technological advancements, demonstrating his deep concern for the spiritual welfare of his brethren.
Rav Kostelitz emphasized that in davening, we recite Kaddish following the petirah of a relative to restore some of the Kiddush Hashem that diminishes when a person passes away. The loss of Rav Matisyahu and the significant Kiddush Hashem he brought to this world is a loss not only for bnei Torah but for all of Klal Yisroel.
